The SAOC is the club for owners & enthusiasts of the Sunbeam Alpine, the classic British sports car from the 1960s.

The Suffolk Tour was our first area event and went pretty well. We started in the pouring rain (yes, we hardy Alpiners do take our cars out in the rain if necessary) at Martlesham Heath Aviation museum, an Aladdin's cave of fascinating memorabilia relating to the airfield’s long and colourful history from 1917. The volunteer staff made us very welcome and gave a short and entertaining talk. Recommended if you like aviation. A bit tricky to find as its is now in the middle of a housing estate, the airfield having long gone.
Next stop Flatford Mill, where Constable painted the ‘Hay Wain’. Lovely setting and well worth a visit if the sun is shining, which it mercifully did as we arrived. National Trust.
A short drive to the Old Guildhall in the pretty town of Hadleigh. Doesn’t sound interesting - it was and a very beautiful medieval building where we were shown around by a lady of great character who made the visit entertaining.
We finished the day at 16th Century Melford Hall in Long Melford near Sudbury. A superb country house still occupied by the famous Hyde-Parker naval family and managed by the National Trust who made us very welcome. Beatrix Potter stayed here and there is memorabilia to those occasions. Well worth a visit.
We set off home after a busy day that went very smoothly thanks to the efforts of the Suffolk members of our area group who organised the Tour skilfully The only fly in the ointment was that some of us drove home accompanied by thunder, lightning, hail, flooded roads - everything it could throw at our poor old cars.
